Email Verification Pricing Explained: Per-Check, Subscriptions and Expiring Credits

Email verification pricing looks simple: a price per check. In practice, two services with a similar headline number can cost very different amounts for the same job, depending on whether credits expire, what you pay for inconclusive results, and the smallest amount you're allowed to buy.

I run an email verification service, so I'm not neutral. I'll try to make up for that by using only published prices (ours from our pricing page, competitors from their official pricing pages as of September 2026), pointing out where our own model costs you something, and showing the math so you can redo it for your own volume.

The three pricing models

Pay-as-you-go credit packs

You buy a block of credits once, and each check uses one. This is the best fit for irregular work: a list clean-up before a campaign, a CRM import, a one-off audit.

The detail that matters most is expiry. Some vendors' pack credits never expire; others expire after a set period. If you buy a big pack for the lower per-check price and only use half of it before it expires, your real per-check price doubled.

Monthly subscriptions

You pay every month for an allowance of checks. The per-check price is usually lower than the smallest packs, and it's a good fit when volume is steady, like verifying every signup to a product. The catch is that unused checks typically reset at the end of the period, so a subscription sized for your busiest month wastes money in quiet ones.

Per-check billing and bundles

Some tools price verification as part of a bigger product (finding emails, outreach, deliverability suites), where a "credit" is shared between features. That can be good value if you use the other features, and poor value if you only need verification.

Four things that change the real price

Question Why it matters
Do credits expire? Unused credits are money lost; expiry turns a cheap pack into an expensive one if you under-use it
What are you charged for unknown / catch-all results? These can be a meaningful share of B2B lists; some vendors charge extra to dig into them
What's the minimum purchase? A great per-check price doesn't help if the smallest pack is far more than you need
Are repeats, invalid syntax and test calls free? Re-running a workflow or testing an integration can quietly eat credits

Charging for unknown and catch-all results

A catch-all domain accepts mail for every address, so nobody can confirm a specific mailbox by probing it. Every verifier has to do the work of checking and then give an inconclusive answer. Most vendors charge for that check, and so do we: catch-all and unverifiable results cost 1 credit, like any other full check, and aren't refunded. The difference is in the answer. Many services return "catch-all", "risky" or "unknown" and leave the decision to you; we return deliverable: false with reason: "catch_all" or "unverifiable", because I built the product around avoiding bounces.

Some vendors offer a separate, more expensive pass for catch-alls. DeBounce, for example, lists its catch-all validation at 10 credits per check, and Clearout offers a paid Deep Verify that can resolve some of them (as of September 2026). If a large part of your list is on catch-all domains, that second pass can matter more than the headline price.

What should be free

Things that aren't verification work shouldn't cost credits. On MailRambo these are free: syntactically invalid addresses, repeat checks of the same address from the same account within 24 hours, the sub-second mode=fast pre-check, the account/balance endpoint, and everything done with a test key.

Competitor prices (as of September 2026)

These come from each vendor's official pricing page as of September 2026, and I've only included numbers we could confirm. Prices change, so check their sites before you buy. Several of these vendors also have larger tiers and features we don't offer.

Vendor Smallest option Around 10,000 checks Credit expiry
ZeroBounce $39 for 2,000 (pay-as-you-go) ZeroBounce ONE from $99/mo (10,000+) Roll over while subscribed; otherwise expiration rules may apply
NeverBounce $8 for 1,000 Growth plan $49/mo for up to 10,000 12 months after purchase
Hunter Starter $49/mo for 2,000 credits Growth $149/mo for 10,000 Subscription credits are monthly
Kickbox $5 for 500; $10 for 1,000 $70 for 10,000 Check their site
Emailable $38 for 5,000 (minimum purchase) Check their site Never
DeBounce Smallest pack is 5,000 credits Check their site Never
MillionVerifier Plans from $39 Check their site Never
MailRambo $5/mo for 1,000, or $9 for 2,000 $29 for 10,000 Pack credits never expire

A few fair points in the other direction:

  • MillionVerifier and DeBounce are built for very large bulk lists, where the lowest per-email price at high volume is the main goal. If you clean millions of addresses, compare at your actual volume.
  • Hunter's credits also cover email finding and domain search, so the verification price isn't the whole story if you use those.
  • ZeroBounce bundles more of a deliverability suite (warmup, inbox testing, activity data).
  • Kickbox is SOC 2 compliant, which matters for some procurement processes.

There's a side-by-side for each on the compare page.

Worked examples

1,000 checks, once

A small list or a trial. On MailRambo that's the Starter plan ($5 for a month) or the 2,000 pack ($9, with 1,000 left over that never expire). Kickbox lists $10 for 1,000 and NeverBounce $8 for 1,000. Where the smallest purchase is larger, like ZeroBounce's $39 for 2,000 or Emailable's $38 minimum for 5,000, the minimum is what you pay.

10,000 checks, once

A one-off list clean-up. Our 10,000 pack is $29. Kickbox lists $70 for 10,000. With subscription-based options like NeverBounce's Growth ($49/mo) or Hunter's Growth ($149/mo), you'd buy at least one month.

5,000 checks a month, every month

Steady signup volume. A monthly plan usually wins here: our Basic plan is $19/month for 5,000. Packs work too if volume is uneven, since leftover pack credits carry forward.

How to estimate your monthly volume

Before comparing prices, work out how many checks you'll actually run:

  1. Signups: new signups per month. With a free fast pre-check on the form and a full check only for addresses that pass, you pay for the survivors.
  2. Imports and lists: how many addresses you import or buy per month, plus any one-off clean-ups this quarter.
  3. Re-verification: lists decay over time as people change jobs. If you re-check an older list before a big send, add those.
  4. Subtract the free stuff: duplicates (dedupe first), invalid syntax, and repeats within 24 hours on our side.

If the total is steady month to month, a subscription is usually cheaper. If it's lumpy, or mostly one-off clean-ups, non-expiring packs avoid paying for checks you don't use. Plenty of people end up with both: a small plan for signups and a pack for occasional list work. On MailRambo, plan credits are used alongside pack credits in the same balance.

Summary

  • Compare the cost of your actual volume, not the headline per-check price.
  • Check expiry, minimum purchase and what happens with catch-all/unknown results.
  • Use subscriptions for steady volume and non-expiring packs for lumpy work.
